Endowment requests can be submitted by individuals or organizations that are interested in fostering an understanding of the literature of Mari Sandoz and the people she wrote about: Native Americans and the settlers of the High Plains. Examples of activities for which endowments may be awarded include:
- research using the Society's archival resources
- workshops or conferences that focus on creative writing
- research projects in range management and agronomy
- educational workshops, seminars and materials on issues that affect the High Plains for K-12 teachers
- educational outreach activities designed to promote understanding of the Native American culture
- internships
- conferences, workshops and other activities of the Mari Sandoz Heritage Society
- support of the facilities and activities of the Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center
